It’s that time of the week – Discussion Tuesday.
From those who are new, each week I post a topic (relevant to my WIP) and try to unravel the mysteries and perspectives of it.

Why do you write?
There are many reasons for people to do things but I want to know what drives you to publish a book; post on your blog; enter a writing competition; or study the art of writing.
My advice to writers is live true to ‘yourself’ and your ‘passion’ nothing else matters.
Do you write because this is what you love doing? Or are you writing because you have a story you are dying to tell? Or do you write because one day you dream of having your book published with a major publisher.
For me, it was something I was drawn into it naturally. A friend showed me The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, after watching it I purchased the books and read them. I was so intrigued and caught up in the world of Tolkien – I read all of his works. It led me to authors similar and I read, and I read, and I read.
Eventually, I thought – I want to create a world with a complex history and page-turning characters.
At the time, I was enrolled at the University of Wollongong in a Bachelor of Arts, unsure of my major. I investigated the idea of studying Creative Writing – the stars aligned and I transferred to a Bachelor of Arts: major in Creative Writing, Sociology and English Literature. After I enrolled, I discovered my grandfather wrote an auto-biography, which I would love to publish for him.
So this brings me back to my original question.
Why do you write?

I write, because it brings me joy. It’s what I’ve always done. It’s how i cope with the world. It’s how I connect with others. Being an introvert writing is how I tend to speak. If I can sell a few books and make a million bucks that would be icing on the cake.

I write because I’m an avid reader who was tired of not being able to find stories like the ones in my head. I wanted to tell a story my way, with my twist and my own unique take on setting and character.
I started work on my first published novel after a disappointing search for a specific type of story led to a book that promised something, but didn’t deliver on that promise, instead taking the safe, mainstream vanilla route that so many other books do, to appeal to the broadest possible market.
I decided that I was going to write that story myself if no one else would tell it, and the rest is history. 😁 My books are what I want to read. I share them with others because I figure I’m not the only one who wants to read stories that are different, and I’ve discovered that to be true.

What an insightful and inspiring response. Thank you so much for sharing. I read that somewhere before, “write the stories you want to read.” In some way, I think I go by that philosophy with my writing.

I write because it gives me aesthetic pleasure. And because English is not my mother tongue, and I like the challenge of describing it on another language. And because I don’t paint, but I think your art needs to go out in some way. And to be read, of course.

I love reading the different reasons for, why we write.
It is my first language and I still have troubling with it!
The beauty with writing, we paint all colours and the human senses with black and white ink 😃👍

I guess i’m all of the above. I’ve always loved the written word, no matter the language, though all my writing was done in english – not my mother tongue either. I guess there’s a dreamer in every writer, and words are what turns those dreams to reality.

I started writing to put my own stories down. I am an avid reader and many times I would read and think of my own ideas. I write now to share them. If there is even one person who loves my story, then I succeeded.
