Bryon Bay Writers Festival 2018

This weekend I am volunteering for the Byron Bay Writers Festival. I am super excited about being a Liasion and an Usher for the Main Stage (Southern Cross University Marque).

It is an important part of being a writer and communicating with like-minded people; and connecting with editors, authors, journalists etc… and the whole industry.

If anyone is in Australia and the North Coast Region of New South Wales, please come down to the festival and support our way of life.

Prophecy

From the concept in my post Tuesday Discussion I spoke about having a prophecy in books. How it can be used as a foreshadowing technique or outline the plot for a chosen one.

I wrote a prophecy for my current novel. After doing some research and discussion I am confused whether I should or not.

Here it is below, please comment and let me know what you think. Whether it should be included, if it needs some tweaking or remove it.

Short Story Sunday

Short Story Sunday.

This will be the third week of this weekly ritual. I hope some people are starting to enjoy the process as much as I am. However, I would like more engagement by other bloggers/ authors or writers. My answer to this is time-frames and deadlines. For those who sign-up to my email listing below, I will send the reminders.

Short Story Sunday – S.S.S.

It’s that time of the week again – S.S.S.

If you missed last week,  here it is.

I want to get people involved, if we can get enough traffic, hopefully some cash prizes can be organised – to make it more interesting.

In the meantime, I will continually post the rules and my stories each week.

Sunday Short Story – a short story on Sundays. In the form of poetry or a short story with a fully developed theme. You can: choose to join and share yours; or read mine – either way you’ll be participating in the weekly event.

Just write.

Word Limit:  up to 500 words/ 5 stanzas

Genre:  Author’s choice (including poetry)

The idea behind it is to think outside your major project or genre. Being completely absorbed by the one project/ theme seems daunting and frustrating. I feel it could be like music; you can love classical but listen to a bit of rock to make you appreciate the finer melodies.

Here is a poem from a bus-stop bench’s perspective I wrote today.

Preserved Pompeii

The one ring around her finger,

my heart upon her limb.

Unable to remain dormant,

our love slowly expands.

Nihilism

A poem I wrote during my existential crisis during university. Enjoy.

Is concern empty,

Or a means to do good?

Keep us locked in the woods,

from the truthful unseen.

 

Is it our way,

to break right from wrong?

A simple impasse to hinder the strong,

each night and day.

 

Construction of thought;

we test what is told

and all that is taught.

To find what we hold,

is endlessly fraught,

till we grow old.

In the Darkness

I watch the moon through the window;

sitting alone is a bad habit of mine.

Too many thoughts and floorboards creaking.

I stare at the white full-moon.

 

Lamington sky and an empty house beneath

my grandparents house. Built by them

and raised my mother and uncles.

 

In my memories they still live in there.

Christmas puddings shared along the long supper table,

a glow in the kitchen and living room.

Grandchildren laughing and running through rooms,

Parents talking in knitted jumpers, sipping brandy and wine.

 

A creak in the floorboard interrupts,

the house fades to black.

Black to staring at

the white full-moon.

Villanelle

Writing different forms of poetry tests your ability to write. Just like my other post with short stories; it’s writing outside your comfort zone.

Here is a villanelle, for those who don’t know what a villanelle poem is:

5 tercets (3 line stanzas) with ABA rhyme scheme, followed by 1 quatrain (4 line stanza) with ABAA rhyme scheme. The first and third lines of the tercet are alternately repeated as are the last lines of the remaining stanzas.
