What Point of View Do You Choose?

It’s that time of the week – Tuesday Discussion.

From those who are new, each week I post a topic (relevant to my WIP) and try to unravel the mysteries and perspectives of it. Last weeks post was Finding a Literary Agent and this week is:

What is your Point of View?

Point of View (P.O.V) is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when planning your book. Although the traditional third-person is most popular, many writers find the first-person works better for some stories.

  • The first-person point of view is generally considered to be the easier viewpoint to handle.
  • First-person is certainly more intimate than third-person. But it’s possible to replicate this intimacy in third person prose.

What P.O.V do you write in?

I tend to write close third-person P.O.V. I like the intimacy of the close third-person perspective but the freedom to use prose for world-building, settings, and scenes.

Almost all books used to be written in third-person, but first-person is getting more and more popular, especially in certain genres. For example, the first-person is increasingly common in young adult and new adult novels. But third-person is the standard when it comes to fantasy and science fiction.

Some writers feel very strongly about one P.O.V or the other. Successful stories have been written in both P.O.V’s.

As a reader: Do you feel strongly about a certain P.O.V?

As a Writer: Do you only write in a certain P.O.V?

  1. Mostly I like writing in the third person POV. For my mystery series I am currently working on I decided to use first person POV and I’m not confident I am doing a good job but I like that I am out of my comfort zone and pushing myself to learn.

    • Writers need to find their voice by going out of their comfort zone. The mystery genre is prodominately first-person so maybe look at what other authors are doing to get some ideas and learn from them. Good luck with it and thank you for commenting 😃

  2. I prefer to write in the third person. I tried to write a novel (which is close to the end) from a first person POV but I found it difficult. I’ll finish it one day and see how it looks. Maybe it’s because I wasn’t used to it. I find using third person mainly and sometimes adding in a chapter or two in the first person to be better. Those first person chapters are usually to convey a characters feelings or for backstory/flashbacks. And also just before the climax of the story.

  3. I wrote a few short stories in first-person but I couldn’t do it. I felt limited with the settings other characters. I tried second-person and that was even harder! But I believe writing is all about finding our voice, for me it’s definitely third-person.
    Good luck finishing the novel!
