What Point of View Do You Choose?

From those who are new, each week I post a topic (relevant to my WIP) and try to unravel the mysteries and perspectives of it. Last weeks post was Finding a Literary Agent and this week is:

What is your Point of View?

Point of View (P.O.V) is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when planning your book. Although the traditional third-person is most popular, many writers find the first-person works better for some stories.

• The first-person point of view is generally considered to be the easier viewpoint to handle.
• First-person is certainly more intimate than third-person. But it’s possible to replicate this intimacy in third person prose.

What P.O.V do you write in?

I tend to write close third-person P.O.V. I like the intimacy of the close third-person perspective but the freedom to use prose for world-building, settings, and scenes.

Almost all books used to be written in third-person, but first-person is getting more and more popular, especially in certain genres. For example, the first-person is increasingly common in young adult and new adult novels. But third-person is the standard when it comes to fantasy and science fiction.

Some writers feel very strongly about one P.O.V or the other. Successful stories have been written in both P.O.V’s.
