We are all inspired by the past.
What was guides for what will.
It’s been 80 years since one of the most influential books in the Western world was published, The Hobbit. Not only has Tolkien influenced and inspired my writing but so have many others.
I made a list of authors that have inspired me to become the best author I can be.
These are:
List of Inspirational Authors
J. R. R Tolkien
Kate Forsyth
David Eddings
Katherine Kerr
Stephen Donaldson
J. D Salinger
George R. R Martin
Anne McCathery
Is there any authors I should know? and
Who inspires whom?

The biggest influence for me right now has to be Terry Pratchett. But I have also been doing a lot of general reading in my genre, for the purposes of influence and growth. Tolkien is an influence, too, but simply because everything in modern fantasy is descended from him.

Anne McCaffery has been a big influence, Andrew J Offutt, Andre Norton, JRR Tolkien, and more recent authors like Raine Thomas, Jennifer L Armentrout (mostly the Lux Series), and Tahereh Mafi.

Great list. I’ve gone back and read through classics that I missed or didn’t appreciate the first time around. Dickens, Hemingway, Conan Doyle, and Stephen King have been inspirational.

Yeah I’ve done that with a few classics. I read The Odyssey and some of Hemingways stories quite recently and it did the same thing 😃

Somerset Maugham. Reading his book, Of Human Bondage, inspired me to write again after nearly 18 years. 🙂
